Chapter 1
Ben’s Letter
Bonnie was so excited by the time that she arrived at the New York International Airport that she stammered when she told her cab driver the name of
her airline. Her shy spirit had always longed to see the world and now she could barely believe that she was actually headed for the journey of a
lifetime. From cab to terminal was one quick blur, but now that she was seated at the proper gate she had a little time to reflect on everything and gather
her thoughts. She took her brother’s last letter out of her purse and began to feel a bit melancholy as his very voice seemed to read the words that he had
carefully written to her months ago,
February 28, 1962
Sis,
If you are reading this letter it will mean that I have
finally fallen too close to the flame, and I am no longer
among the living. Please do not sit around grieving for me
or feeling bad about yourself. Hell, I don't even feel so bad
about the thought of dying. I have lived my life exactly as
I have always wanted; eagerly, dangerously, and even at
times I might say carelessly. Experiencing life and saving a
small fortune of my own has always been at the top of my
list, but now you are my only concern.
Bonnie, you have always been too shy, and too afraid
to experience much of anything. You need to lighten up,
and you need to live a little. I have been around the world
twice and never once felt disappointed. I know that you would
enjoy traveling as much as I have so here it is on a silver platter.
I am leaving my fortune to you with this simple request: Enjoy
life, travel, and experience some of the real wonders of the
world. I love you, sis, and I will always be around to keep
you to keep you safeso go on now and life your life just a little.
I all ready paid for two so ask Betty to go with you. Cheer up,
Bon, make the call and take the trip. It is the last thing that I
will ever ask you to do.
Love Always,
Ben
